We are thrilled by the
successful organization of the 33rd Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference,
which was held on our Stony Brook University campus on March 10-11.
This year’s meeting
embraced the National Institute of Health's focus on translational research,
with an emphasis placed on, Engineering Innovations in Life Sciences and
Healthcare. The outstanding keynote/plenary presentations
featuring three exciting topics from vulnerable plaque rupture to brain imaging
and corporate culture were well received by the audience.
This conference carried
on the long tradition
of collegiality to encourage presentations from graduate
and undergraduate students in all areas of biomedical engineering. A total of 226 students and faculty
members from various universities and colleges in the Northeast US and many
other regions of the country actively participated in this exciting event. It
was a great success! As the organizing committee, we were deeply impressed by the excellent
quality and the diversity of the presentations. Based on the recommendations of
the session chairs which included faculty members from various universities and
colleges, the prizes for student paper competitions were awarded to:
Gary Comtois (Worcester Polytechnic Institute), 1st Prize
Jesse Muir/Yi Xia (Stony Brook University), 2nd Prize
Justin Seil (Brown University) , 3rd Prize
In addition, based on
need and traveling expenses, five travel awards were given to:
Alexander Potts Western New England College
Uchechukwu Okpara University of Wisconsin-Madison
Sabrina Puckett Brown University
John DiCecco University of Rhode Island
Nicholas McBride Worcester Polytechnic Institute
In closing, we would like to express
our gratitude towards your participation in this conference. We would also like
to thank Stony Brook University for its financial support and IEEE & EMBS
for technical co-sponsorships.
The next Northeast Biomedical Engineering Society Meeting 2008 with be held at Brown University (chaired by Thomas Webster)
