Build/Maintain Your Website
The BMS site has 2 types of templates for your faculty site.
A single page CV type template and a multi page "mini-site"
template. To use the power of these templates, they need to
be edited in Macromedia's DreamWeaver.
You may request the BME to load your single page template,
or you may request a multi page template folder for your own
editing.
Online Course Administration
First Time Online Course Set-Up
Augment your teaching with an interactive component that includes
a wide range of multimedia web based tools. To start a course

Blackboard has been upgraded to version 5. You will find
the look of things to be different although the functionality
is not very different. The new look will prepare you for our
expansion to Level 2 of Blackboard in January.
When you first login, if you got to the My
Blackboard screen, the view is very different. When you
go to your course, it will look much as it did before. The
Control Panel button is not green and does not stand out.
The layout of the Control Panel is the biggest change. All
the things you could do before are still there with a few
more things, but the order of everything is different. You
have some choices in the names of the buttons down the side
of your class. The Academic Web Resources organized by Blackboard
provide a major addition to product.
To acquaint you with the new features, we will have a session,
"What's New in Blackboard" from 1-2 pm. on Wed.
August 23 in the Library SINC site classroom.

Intro to Blackboard Class
For those who want to know how the course management system,
Blackboard can enhance your class. This session will include
an overview of the Blackboard features which include: course
document areas, external links, discussion boards, email,
personal Web pages, information students can change, quizzes.
Feel free to share this email with other faculty and graduate
students who wish to be introduced to a web based courseware,
now being offered at USB.

Setting up a Blackboard Class
This class is design for instructors who already have a Bb
course
established. If you wish to have a course created for your
class, please send in this form
no later than 48 hours before the class session you wish to
attend.
1. Customizing class options.
2. Organization of class syllabus, documents, and assignments.
3. Using folders, document links or the program editor to
create documents.
4. Setting up Discussion Forums.
5. The class will include instruction and hands-on experience
setting
up your class.
6. Bring a disk with a syllabus or any other class documents.
Offered:Thursday, Aug. 24, 1-3pm ; Tuesday, Aug.
29, 1-3pm
Creating On-Line Quizzez and Surveys
This class is design for instructors who already have a Bb
course established. If you wish to have a course created for
your class, please send in this form
no later than 48 hours before the class session you wish to
attend.
1. Creating a pool of questions that can be exported to future
classes and utilized over & over.
2. Types of questions include T/F, multiple choice, matching,
fill-in
the blank, multiple answer, short answer.
3. Randomizing questions.
4. The class will include instruction and hands-on experience.
5. Bring questions you would use.

Research Involving Human
Subjects: Urgent Notice
As required by SBU's Federalwide Assurance, all individuals
who are involved in human subjects research, and who will
work either directly with subjects or patients, or with data
or biological specimens derived from subjects or patients,
will be required to Successfully complete one of two training
programs offered by the University by February 13, 2002*.
If all such individuals are not trained, work on on-going
projects must be suspended, and IRB approval for pending projects
will be withheld until such time as all individuals are identified,
and training verified, by the Office of Research Compliance.

*The exceptions to this deadline
are those who have NIH awards due to be awarded before this
date. Per the federal mandate, training will need to be accomplished
prior to grant award.
