Acceptance into the Biomedical Engineering
Major
Freshman
and transfer applicants who have specified their interest
in the major in biomedical engineering may be accepted directly
into the major upon admission to the University. Applicants
admitted to the University but not immediately accepted into
the biomedical engineering major may apply for acceptance
to the major at any time during the academic year by contacting
the director of the undergraduate program. Students in good
academic standing may apply in any semester, but priority
for admission to the Biomedical Engineering Major is given
to those students who have: 1) completed MAT 132 and PHY 132
or their equivalents; 2) earned a GPA of 3.2 in all mathematics
and physics courses with no more than one grade in the C range;
and 3) received completed course evaluations for all transferred
courses that are to be used to meet requirements of the major.
Engineering Component
The engineering concepts are introduced in a sequence
of courses which highlight the sciences, electricity,
mechanics, fluids, and biology, in the context of Biomedical
Engineering. This introduction to engineering should enable
students to comfortably interact with engineers in their future
careers, and as importantly, empower students with a problem
solving approach that may be applied to a wide variety of
issues, including those in medicine, law, business, and research.
Minor Program
The minor program requires 21-23 credits of course work,
though up to 7 credits may also be used to satisfy the requirements
of your major. Required course work includes BIO-201 or BIO-202
or BIO 203, as well as four courses offered through the Biomedical
Engineering Program. The remaining credits may be selected
from a pre-approved list of courses. Students must have the
approval of their advisor and a GPA of at least 3.0 to enter
the Minor program. All courses taken for the Minor must be
graded at the C or higher level. Course options permit students
to individualize their program to meet specific career objectives.
