Dr. Carlson received a B.S. in Psychology from Iowa State University in 2003. He received a M.S. in Experimental Psychology from Western Illinois University with the thesis titled “The Role of the Amygdala in Psychostimulant-Induced Facilitation of Attention-Related Performance”. A Ph.D. in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Program at Southern Illinois University was received with a dissertation titled “The Neural Mechanisms of Nonconscious Fear-Induced Spatial Attention: A Combined ERP and fMRI Study.” Broadly, he is interested in neuroimaging, as well as, the cognitive neuroscience of conscious and nonconscious mediated emotion and attention processing in a variety of sensory modalities.
