John Stewart, RN

John Stewart, RN has been a staff nurse on the Acute Adult Psychiatry Unit at University Medical Center at Stony Brook New York since 1984. Prior to that he had been a supervisor at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, on the Foresnsic Unit for two years. Duties at UMC include being part of the multidisiplinary treatment team, evaluation of patients, treatment planning and teaching of patients and their families. He also assists with electroconvulsive therapy and is ACLS certified.

During his time at Stony Brook he has participated in several research protocols including pharmaceutical studies both pre market, sertraline and post market comparing low dose risperdol to to haloperidol in a double blind study with first break psychosis. Also for the last 10 years has been involved in obtaining participation, interviews and blood samples from subjects for several genetic studies involving both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder for researchers at Stony Brook, NY/Oxford University, England and New York University, NYC. For the last three years he has worked with The Suffolk County Mental Health Project, interviewing and obtaining blood samples for their "Predictors of relapse study" which is a collaboration with LIJ Hillside. His current research with LSEC investigates limbic dysregulation in schizophrenia.
