Academic advising is a crucial component to the undergraduate program. It ensures that all pre-requisites are met for subsequent courses. It enables faculty to identify situations or risk factors related to poor academic performance. It permits the students time for one-on-one dialogue with their advisors to inquire about Independent Research or Internship opportunities or future professional interests. During their first semester on campus, all new BME majors meet with the Director of the Undergraduate Program in BME. During this time, an online advising profile is created for that student. Based on the students interest, a faculty academic advisor is assigned. Online access is provided to both the faculty academic advisor and the student. All undergraduate BME students are required to meet with their academic advisor prior to registration each semester. In fact, a HOLD on registration for classes is placed for all BME students, until academic advising is complete.
Current BME students should follow the posted course sequence for their selected track. Alternate course sequences are available from the academic advisors for WISE, Honors College and pre-medical or pre-dental students.
Advisors are initially assigned by the Director of the Undergraduate Program, based on the interests of the student and expertise of the faculty. Freshman are emailed with their advisor's name and office location during their first semester on campus. The Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Jessica Kuhn, maintains a complete listing of all academic advisors for all BME major students. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Each BME faculty member advises many BME major students. Each BME faculty member maintains weekly office hours for routine advising. It is the obligation of each student to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their stated registration time each semester, so that the hold on registration can be removed. Students are expected to plan early, and arrive to their advisor with a list of the courses they wish to take.
All BNG minor students are advised by their major advisor (BIO or BCH) for courses related to their major requirements. They are advised by the Director of the Undergraduate Program in BME for courses related to their minor.
